About

Roanoke City Salt is an independent, reader-supported newsroom covering the city of Roanoke and the surrounding Blue Ridge. We do original reporting on the things that shape daily life here: the city hall decisions, the development fights, the small businesses and the arts and the moments that turn this valley into a community.

We do this because Roanoke deserves a newsroom that answers to its readers, not to advertisers or absentee owners. Every dollar our members contribute funds the reporting, the editing, and the people doing the work. Nothing else.

The name is a small nod to two things. Roanoke, the Star City of the South. And salt — the thing that preserves what matters, draws out what is hidden, and turns an ingredient into a meal. A good newsroom does something similar for a place.

We publish three to five pieces a week and send a careful weekly newsletter every Friday morning. If you read something that matters to you, you can become a member for $9.99/month or $99/year. Your membership pays for reporter salaries, editing, and the archives that will still be searchable in twenty years.
